New Year’s Day Hilton Head

It was a cool clear day at Hilton Head, on January 1, 2013. We headed down to the beach, just as a flock of pelicans flew past. I guess they were out celebrating last night, and just heading home.

We had read that there would be a Polar Bear Swim at the north end of the island (it was cancelled), but we were surprised to find a small group of teenagers who had just done a Polar plunge at our beach.
In the picture below, you can see one of the hearty bunch, looking for his towel.

Jumping into a frigid ocean isn’t something that I would consider doing, but I admire the bravery of these teens!

The water was a little rougher than it has been for the past couple of days, and the skies were overcast. It’s warm though, with the temperature climbing to about 65F by early afternoon.

The bright spot on the morning walk was seeing these two ladies, with their festive Happy New Year tiaras. Next year, we’ll have to bring hats too.
