Golf at Rose Hill Plantation Hilton Head
Yesterday I went off Island to play a course called the Rose Hill Golf Club. The day started out cloudy and cool but cleared and warmed up as the round went on.
The course is surrounded by nice looking homes but we mostly stayed out of their yards. The cost was reasonable $37.50 including round, cart, tax, hot dog, bag of chips and a soft drink.
The couple I was playing with told me that there was a resident alligator who had staked out the ninth hole. As you approach this short par three, you can pick out the hazards pond in front of tee box, three sand traps protecting the green and oh yes, an alligator on the far bank.
Here’s what he looks like when you get a little closer – but not too close!
The only thing that continues to surprise me is how close other wildlife will settle down near an alligator. These birds were about 15 feet from him, apparently sunning themselves after a short swim in the pond.
Then after a short snack break on to the tenth, a par four with a beautiful pond and fountain right off the tee, on this dog leg left.
A couple of holes later we spotted another gator with turtles and a heron enjoying the warm sun.
We saw two more – this one lazing on the rough behind a green, and another one -- the largest we saw -- but he was too far away for a picture with the iPhone.
I had a pretty good round, and enjoyed the company and the wildlife, at Rose Hill Golf Club.
