Hilton Head Swamps

In addition to the beautiful trees and sandy beaches, Hilton Head has many swampy sections. Some are covered with bright green algae, like this swampy patch. The colors are almost the same as a lush patch of grass, but you wouldn't want to step on them!

So far, the only wildlife that we've seen in the swamps are long-legged birds. I'm sure there's plenty for them to eat, in the murky waters.

The birds ignore us, unless we get too close, and they don't seem to mind having their picture taken.

But, when they get bored, or we tiptoe too close to them, the birds take flight. Usually, they land a few feet away, in the swamp, where they know they'll be safe from humans.
